MSDS is a material safety data sheet, sometimes called safety data sheet (SDS) or product safety data sheet (PSDS) is an important component of product stewardship and workplace safety. It is provide workers and emergency personnel with procedures to handling or working with that substance in a safe manner includes information such as physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point, etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment, and spill-handling procedures. MSDS formats different from one country to another country, vary from source to source depend on their national requirements. MSDS is enforced by OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) which does not include any particular format must be followed in presenting information.
MSDS used systematic system for cataloging information on chemicals, chemical compounds, and chemical mixtures. These data sheets can be found anywhere where chemicals are being used. The information may include instructions for the safety use and potential hazards associated with all material material. MSDS is divided into nine (9) big section. The sections are Product Information isncluding name of product identifier, manufacturer and suppliers names, addresses, and emergency phone numbers, Hazardous Ingredients, Physical Data, Fire or Explosion Hazard Data, Reactivity Data contain information on the chemical instability of a product and the substances it may react with other, Toxicological Properties that may affecting health , Preventive Measures, First Aid Measures , Preparation Information: person who is responsible and in charge for preparation and date of preparation of MSDS.
There are some sections that more important than others who work with controlled products They always read carefully the name of the chemical, know the hazards, try to understand safe handling and storage instructions, so they know what to do when they are in emergency condition. Most of health hazard information are written in general terms. So if you really need explanation about MSDS you can contact doctor, nurse or specialist.
When will you used MSDS? Before start using it, please be familiar with the hazards of a product, match the name of the chemical on your container with the MSDS’s list, knowing the hazards, understanding safe handling and storage instructions.
Is MSDS expired?Of course MSDS can expired, a controlled product not be more than three years old. If you are buying and still using that product, you may not have a current MSDS. Please contact the manufacturer or supplier and asking newer version of the MSDS. f new, significant information becomes available before the three years has elapsed, the supplier is required to update the product label and MSDS.
If the supplier don’t have no new information within three years period, the supplier must reviewing the MSDS and the label, and revise the preparation date on the MSDS not just if necessary. And if you are a employer you must more sensitive about new information about the chemical or what their ingredients, always update your knowledge by learn new skill too, like learn computer application chemicals.
